Randy Fung's Biography
I was born in the year of the dog, 1946 in San Francisco. My family imigrated to this country in the 1890’s and I am forth generation Chinese American. My family moved down to San Mateo, a suburb of San Francisco when I was four.
In my younger days I took Kenpo when I was fourteen and won my schools League championship in my senior year. You can read more about my early days, here:

I first met Kuo Lien Ying in 1967 and studied with him until his passing.
In the early years I studied with him daily, but later on, because of distance went weekly.
I met my wife, Linda in 1969 and we have been married for 38 years. We have one son.
From 1973 to 1974 my wife and I lived in a Zen community. We would take the zen teachers kids to study with Sifu Kuo’s main disciple, Bing Gong. We studied with Bing for a while, and one day I asked Bing if I could teach. He asked Sifu Kuo, and Si Fu requested that I go back and study with him directly. So we had to drive from Sonoma county down to Portsmouth square for every weekend over a couple of years time.
In 1975 he granted permission for me to teach his style.
I started my classes in Sonoma county in 1975 and taught until 1991.
I did not have a formal studio, we just workout in school yards and rooms you could rent.
I taught martial arts classes at Sonoma State in 1978 and 1979 filling in for Sifu James Wong of a Hung Gar school.

1979, I was the first student of Kuo to enter an International Martial arts competition. It was held in Oakland, CA and I took a first place in mens black belt forms. You can read about it here.

Around 1980, I studied with James DeMille who was a student of Bruce Lee in the Seattle group with Ed Hart and Jessie Glover.
In the mid 1980’s I studied classical wing chun and chen style tai chi with master Gene Chen for a couple of years.
In 1991 I disbanded my classes and moved to the mountains in Lake county where we have a ranch and animals and have resided since. I have taught privately from time to time.

BUT THEN, SHORT BIO’S DO NOT TELL YOU MUCH OTHER THAN THE DRY FACTS!
In 1984, there was an event that changed the direction of my life and practice.
You can read about it here more in detail.
A man entered my house with a gun. I realized at that point that even with my knowledge of martial arts, i did not know anything about the most likely weapon one might encounter.
Sure I knew about the classical weapons, but a gun is the modern day sword.
In 1984 I started my training in modern weapons.
From 1985 to 1990 I shot pistol competition.
In 1989 I started a business manufacturing custom anatomical target grips for national pistol competitors.
And how does this relate to Martial arts. It IS martial arts and just a continuation of my practice from when I was little to the present day. Practice goes beyond the surface thing that you are practicing. It flows beneath. All of it is my practice. This website is my practice.
If this idea intrigues you, you can read more here:
For my current gung fu practice, I still practice Northern Shaolin, Tai Chi, Staff, sword, wing chun and other classical styles, but I am also studying with a new mentor. He taught firearms training to the local sheriffs department and has studied with some of the top law enforcement shooting schools in the country.
