PORTSMOUTH SQUARE, CHINATOWN, SAN FRANCISCO, CA
This is fairly good composite of Portsmouth Square. In the left photo you can see the elevator overhang where everyone did their warmups. In front of that is the central workout space. To the very far right of the left frame you can see the bench where the swords and staffs were placed every morning. In the far background, against the tall trees, you can barely make out the bridge going to the TransAmerica building. In the right photo, Bing Gong is doing a staff set. This is the south end of the square and in the background you can make out the chess tables where they always played later in the mornings. There was a small workout area over there as well. These photo were donated by Walt McAllister and are from around 1974.
Some more photos donated by Walt McAllister. The left photo is a view looking north toward Washington Street. You can see all the way down the square in this photo. At the very left of this photo you can just barely make out the poles of the elevator overhang seen in the top left photo. The right photo is a good view of the Kuo Lien Ying Tai Chi Academy. Lost of photos in the window. Anyone else notice this was before the chin to toe paintings?
This is at the south end of the square facing west towards the studio to the left behind the pine tree. That path is where the weapons were walked out to the benches, and for students going back and forth to the studio. That's Don Boone challenging me as I get into my semi Bruce Lee stance! Arthur is between us smiling, Linda Fung talking to Bing Gong and Ellen to his left. Photo donated by Randy Fung, but photographer unknown. Around 1980?
Photo donated by Bing Gong. This is a great view looking west towards the elevator overhang with the people in the background doing warmups. The buildings at the back are along the street alley named Brehnam Place. Sifu Kuo's studio is at the far left of the overhang.
